'Doubtless Catherine marked the difference between her friends, as one came in and the other went out. The contrast resembled what you see in exchanging a bleak, hilly, coal country for a beautiful fertile valley; and his voice and greeting were as opposite as his aspect.'
ByOkay, so while and the lack of GAY teen vampires in fiction, blogreader 'SHobbs' wrote me to say that has Gay teen vampires in it!Damien and his boyfriend Jack are essential (and adorable!) members of the ensemble. Thanks SHobbs! So the main storyline revolves around 16 year old Zoey, who is 'marked' to become a vampire (from a regular human) and gets to go to, um, Vampyre school. (Love the spelling of that!)It turns out Zoey is special - even for vampyres in training - and she has special powers. But she's not the only one with special powers. There's some BAD girls at the school - BAD Vampyre girls. Now Zoey has to stop them, with the help of her new vampyre friends.Interestingly, 'Marked: The House of Night #1' was written by a mother-daughter team. Kristin was 19 when she co-wrote it with her Mom, 'P.C.'
Who already had a track record of writing adult fantasy romance novels.Add your review of 'Marked: The House of Night #1' in comments! Said. After finding out that there was a gay character in Marked, I gave it a go. I've got to say, I'm really not a fan.The book didn't really seem to know what it wanted to be. Some characters dropped a lot of expletives while others said things like poopie. It felt like it was straddling the line between independent reader and young adult, without really knowing where it wanted to land.Damien, the gay character doesn't have the biggest role in this book. Apparently, there are other gay students at the vampire school, but Damien thinks they're all too girly for him (but he cross-stitches). I didn't like that at all.
To me it read like Damien was a 'good gay' as opposed to the girly gays.At some point I'll probably pick up the 2nd in the series to kill time, but I Marked didn't do much for me. It was great and quite surprising leaving us guessing hanging on the edge of the seat. If you enjoy supernatural mystery type books then you should really try this one. The end leaves us wanting book two I must say. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars. This is one of.THE BEST. UF or supernatural-character-fiction books I've read lately. I experienced zero page-filler/irrelevant nonsense as I read this book. As my first by Erin Bedford, I'm impressed & I gotta say, I like her style. I'll be starting book 2 very soon.
I recommend this to all fantasy lovers, especially those seeking a laugh.:). The demon tries to subdue Mary but we learn she isn’t human but rather she is a fallen angel. Mary as a protagonist is witty, sarcastic and very funny at times despite carrying the burden of her own personal demons. As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel we see Mary and her assistant Trisha get called in one a police case because a very unusual body has been found.
While working with the police Mary learns this is no normal occult practise but a demon raising demons ritual, this girl is the 3rd of 5 virgins that need to be sacrificed for the demon’s work to be completed. Mary begins to investigate the recent death by heading to the one place they all had in common, The Night Owl bar. At the bar Mary comes across a demon who was finding the virgins but not killing them and this only make her more determined to find out the truth. Sid the barman was a very interesting character although he was prone to mood swings but this could be due to something else as he constantly wear a rosary and even makes the comment “you wouldn’t like me without it” which made me think he could be more than he seems despite being human. As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel we see Mary offered up as bait for the demons as they are finding the girls through a dating site and she is the only one that can draw the demons out long enough to get the information they need. After signing up for the dating site there isn’t much Mary can do other than wait, during the interview for the dating site Mary doesn’t really have to lie because she doesn’t understand dating really and I’d bet money on that fact that Mary is a virgin.
We also see Mary get arrested with dealing with her normal cheating spouses case where Sergeant Thompson has to bail her out when she finally gets a date from the website. As we approach the halfway mark in the novel we see Mary go on her date. Her date, Dean definitely isn’t the guy they are looking for he is human and even attempts to drug Mary in the club in order to get off with her, definitely not demon material. As we cross into the second half of the novel her second date Owen turns out to be exactly who Mary is looking but before she can get the drop on him she finds herself surrounded by demons with no gun and not enough holy power to see them all off at once. Despite being “kidnapped” by the very demons she hopes to kill and capture Mary has to play the victim – which she doesn’t do very well – until they are vulnerable enough for her to attack. While setting up the ritual one demon Dawson, catches wind that there is something very off about Mary but those thoughts are quickly vanished when the boss shows up.As we approach the ¾ mark in the novel the boss is actually called Asmodeus; the master demon of lust and even Mary isn’t immune to his power but she has no other option but to get away from them as soon as she can. Mary manages to escape the demon but barely and with Sid’s help, this is the first time that Mary admits to herself that she likes Sid and it was hinted at earlier on.
I loved the slightly steamy scene between Mary and Sid but something is holding Mary back, it’s the man from her past the one she would have considered starting a family with and the reason she lost her wings and is stuck on Earth but that was all before Sid.As we cross into the final section of the novel we see Trisha get taken by the demons in Mary’s place and Mary decides to go all guns blazing to get her friend back but things may be more difficult than she first thought. When Mary faces Asmodeus for the second time we see the demon try and bargain with Mary with her beloved and his whereabouts which surprisingly doesn’t even phase Mary. The twist was so unexpected and completely took my breath away, but in the end it doesn’t matter. As Asmodeus end up dead and Mary mortally wounded everything comes together and as soon as she is well enough Mary is out for blood and vengeance.Overall, I loved this novel and I can’t wait to get my hand on the next book or anything else by the author as soon as I can. I highly recommend this novel to all fantasy and paranormal lovers and I would also recommend it as a break in to the paranormal romance genre. It pays the bills.when Mary actually remembers to get payment for the services rendered. Lately the cases for demons and exorcisms are coming in more and that is beginning to worry Mary because it means that something is going down and with this many it can't be good. What comes next is worse.young women are being killed in a specific way and the cops are just now letting Mary in on the situation. She quickly puts together that there have been several before the case she's finally brought in on and she knows it spells major trouble.
But trouble keeps on coming. The police want her to be the bait to be the next victim thing is is that it not only nearly gets her killed when she comes face to face with more than she can handle but then someone who trusts and depends on her becomes a part of it as well. So now Mary has to make a choice and it has to be one she can live with.Marked by Hell is an engaging first installment of this series. I could hardly put this book down but when I had to my fingers were itching to get back to and find out what happens next.
I absolutely love that the author still has Mary working out the mechanics of being or at least pretending to be human. She doesn't quite understand the emotions and feelings that people get and why they do certain things but thanks to a little unwanted help from the demons she gets a clue or two and begins to piece things together. She can be a bit automaton at times but I like that she cares for and about her assistant especially when she, Mary, gets into a couple situations and she tries to make sure that the girl knows she's okay. There were a couple spelling errors in here but other than that I really loved this book.
It really flowed well for me and I loved how realistic some of the characters were in how they acted and reacted. There is just the right touch of humor in this book and I love the budding romance that is going on. Not a lot but just enough to pull you in and keep things moving forward. Needless to say.I want more!!!!!In my opinion this book is a great start to a brand new series by this talented author and I cannot wait for more books about Mary Wiles. I know they are going to be a real blast for sure. If you're a fan of this author and considering this book I say get it and get it now!

Besides hunting cheating spouses she also hunts demons on the side. Mary's also working with LAPD on a retainer with one of the detectives. In other words, she keeps busy but, at the same time finds the human world conflicting and confusing. It was interesting to see her figure out humanity as an angel living amongst the humans having to blend in like a mere human. The world building is minimal and all the relationships, friends, past etc.
Are established. There is no build up. It felt in a way, book 2 in a series to me.
Where most of the build up is done in book 1 and book 2 brushes over it the little stuff. The reason Mary was on the human plane was not clear to me. I know she was here cuz she tried to save her friend Ramiel and went after him despite the orders. However, we have absolutely no details about it even to the very end except from what Mary tells us several times that he was her bff and commanding officer. She's on a vengeance path to retrieve her friend and find out who cut off her wings. Her response to Sid, her bartender friend and apparently, who she has the hots for also felt kind of lukewarm. I wasn't feeling the tension, or connection. I assumed he was just a random friend who she likes.not LIKES in other ways.
I'm still on the fence about him. I knew there was something more to him and we find out later in the book.Overall, it is short and fun.
Would I continue with the series.maybe. A fantastic book. Erin Bedford did it again with angels and demons. The story about Mary Wiles has just touch the surface in this first book but the players are introduced. Mary the still hasn't been determined 'fallen angel' ' fallen implies you had a choice'.
The wonderful sweet assistance Trisha that has to much brains but not much common since. And last but not least there's Sid. He's the owner of The Night Owl Bar and a whole lot more. Hot sexy and Mary's crush.
But she is an angel has no idea what that feeling is she gets when she's near him. Those are the main character so far.Mary hunts down demons and sends them back to Hell. She makes a living as a PI and being a specialist for the PD. There have been several murders of young woman and Mary is called to help. Mary's going undercover and Trisha takes her shopping for dresses.
Mary has no idea why humans are so interested in clothing. That's when Sid knows she's hot and Mary gets the strange feelings. The demons get Mary and it's not just lower level demons is also one badass Asmodeus the demon of lust. Now, in heaven if you want a child you paired up and have one, so Mary has no idea what lust, sex and love us all about. She's kidnapped but she gets away, killing only a few of the demon ring that are killing virgins.
Mary has her first lustful feeling when Sid comes and gets her. The first kiss that has her wanting more. In the meantime, Asmodeus does the wrong thing and takes Trisha. Mary and Sergeant Thompson go after her.
I can say that's when some of Mary's pass comes out and that's when Trisha finds out Mary's an angel. Mary finds out that love hurts. The story has just begun and Mary Wiles is a fantastic character. I can't wait to read the next book. Mary once lived in heaven as an angel.
Now she's a private investigator on earth with the paranormal as her specialty. Mary hates demons and exterminates them whenever she gets the chance. Demons tortured her and sawed of her wings. Mary still struggles with the horrific things they've done to her.

She knows immediately that this is the work of demons. They have to act fast because at the next full Mary once lived in heaven as an angel. She's a feisty and badass angel, but she's also so innocent and angelic at the same time. Humans and angels are very different.

Mary doesn't really have to eat or sleep and she prefers to shower with holy water. Mary is hilarious and I loved how she thinks about life on earth. She's new to how men and women interact with each other and never had a first kiss. Because of her innocence Mary is incredibly honest and loving. She'll go to the ends of the earth for people to keep them safe. If angels would ever be living among us I wish they will all be like Mary.Marked by Hell is the first book in a new series about Mary Wiles. I have read other books by Erin Bedford and I love how she makes even the most unreal things feel real.
Mary is tough and I like stories with strong main characters. Her sidekick Trisha is a young girl who manages to keep Mary focused on the important things. They're a great team together.
I think Erin Bedford has grown enormously as an author and she shows that with Marked by Hell. This new series definitely got off to a flying start.
Marked by Hell is a masterpiece and I can't wait for the next book in this series. This isn’t the first book I’ve read by Ms. Bedford, but all the other ones have been romances with a fairy tale twist.
I really enjoy the way she writes so I eagerly read this one. I’m very glad I did. I hope we get to see more of her in future books since she now knows what Mary is. However, I do have to admit I was on the fence about Sid.
I don’t feel I got to know him as well as I would have liked, but this is a first book, and I know I’ll get to know him better. If you are a fan of her romances, I have to warn you there isn’t much romance in this one. The potential is there, but it hasn’t come to fruition much yet. Don’t let that keep you from reading this, though. This was an all-around great book.
I’ve already pre-ordered the next in the series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. If you like light urban fantasy, you will love this. Highly recommend! Mary's nativity of the human world makes for great comedy relief, alongside her friend Trisha who unknowingly teaches her the ways of the world. When her contact at the LAPD ask for her help with a murder, Mary uncovers a plan to bring a demon to the human realm. This case will cause Mary to find out things about herself and friends that she never would have seen coming.
It will also set her on the track of her former angel friend and CO who has been missing since Mary came to Earth. I really enjoyed this story. It is a great start to a new series by Ms. It is also a little 'darker' than her other series but still a great read.
Looking forward to the next installment.I received an Advance Readers Copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing. Mary is a fallen Angel who lost her wings while in Hell and is still after 5 years trying to work out how our world works like forgetting nudity isn't natural and embarrasses her side kick Trish by changing in her office/bedroom in front of her. She is working as a PI and brought into a murder investigation due to abnormal things at the scene from there she has to work with Detective Thompson to find out who is behind murdering not one but multiple girls before the final girl is sacrificed and a Mary is a fallen Angel who lost her wings while in Hell and is still after 5 years trying to work out how our world works like forgetting nudity isn't natural and embarrasses her side kick Trish by changing in her office/bedroom in front of her. There are some good twists here as well as some world building starting to come through so looking forward to more in the series, my only thing is about Sid and how did Mary now know?I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I got this as an ARC for my honest opinion and review. I love the cover of this book. It has been awhile since I read a book that has angels and demons in it. I was not sure how this would compare to other books by Erin Bedford, but I love Mary's attitude. Mary is an Angel on earth that is working as PI.

First book in a series. Can't wait for more. Marked By Hell by Erin BedfordWow! What I ride this book has been. I loved the concept and after reading it I will certainly be looking for more books by Ms Bedford. The story-line is refreshingly gritty, coming from a perspective I’ve not read before; a concept I haven’t seen. Away from the mass of predictable reads, this book will leave you wondering where the next twist will be, when your thoughts and preconceived ideas will be tugged from you.

I have a special love for angels, I even collect them, so seeing a story about a fallen angel how could i pass it up.
Mary is a fallen angel who pretends to be a human Private Investigator. Things are happening spiritually and that means trouble from demons. When she is called in to help she may be in a little deeper than she knows. Armed with a sarcastic come back and angelic powers Mary may find out it isn't enough.Great read as this author always provides a story that is fun yet intriguing wi I have a special love for angels, I even collect them, so seeing a story about a fallen angel how could i pass it up. Great light enjoyable I can't wait for more. I was gifted with a copy of this story by Erin Bedford (not my first time reading her stories) and I really enjoyed how she combined mystery with her fallen angel vs demons theme.

There is some humor, drama, intrigue, suspense, mystery and some romantic encounters along the way and they add up to an enjoyable read. I really enjoyed this action packed story. Mary is a great character. She is strong and outspoken and not afraid to take on anyone. As a fallen angel she really struggles with fitting in with the humans and has a past that haunts her.
I loved her assistant Trisha who helps her adjust to the world without realizing who Mary is. There are plenty of surprises and twists that keep the story moving and this book ends on a major cliffhanger. It was so very intriguing. The spin on heaven and hell and on fallen angels and demons is amazing. Mary is so mysterious in so many ways and in others she is vulnerable and laid bare for the reader. The supporting characters are equally entertaining. Sidney is beyond interesting and I hope there is more of him in the next book. The plot for this book is unique and I hope the author finds ways to continue this series for several books!

I volunteered to read this book. Erin Bedford is an otaku, recovering coffee addict, and Legend of Zelda fanatic. Her brain is so full of stories that need to be told that she must get them out or explode into a million screaming chibis. Obsessed with fairy tales and bad boys, she hasn’t found a story she can’t twist to match her deviant mind full of innuendos, snarky humor, and dream guys.On the outside, she’s a work from home m Erin Bedford is an otaku, recovering coffee addict, and Legend of Zelda fanatic.

Obsessed with fairy tales and bad boys, she hasn’t found a story she can’t twist to match her deviant mind full of innuendos, snarky humor, and dream guys.On the outside, she’s a work from home mom and bookbinger. One the inside, she’s a thirteen-year-old boy screaming to get out and tell you the pervy joke they found online. As an ex-computer programmer, she dreams of one day combining her love for writing and college credits to make the ultimate video game!Until then, when she’s not writing, Erin is devouring as many books as possible on her quest to have the biggest book gut of all time. She’s written over thirty books, ranging from paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and even scifi romance. Also, third person is really weird when writing about yourself.
